Silencing the City

A handmade book for Silencing the City, telling the story of when the Beast from the East struck.

Taking Silencing the City and transforming it into a handmade book has been something I have wanted to produce for some time.

The nature of my work means I don’t necessarily envisage using all of the same photographs which appear on my website in the book, but at the same time I want to tell the same story.

The idea I wanted to try was a lay-flat concertina-style book which would offer some control as to the tempo by which the viewer can go through the book.

I have spent time working with bookmaker Gillian at Juju Books exploring and discussing different options for bindings and formats, along with practical issues.

With a format in mind, the next steps were to calculate sizing, trying to maximise paper utilisation, prepare the layout and design using Affinity Publisher, and then print the book.

A further session with Gillian brought the book together over the course of a day, dealing with unknown issues of working with a new paper.
