The Opportunity

I have discussed some of the planning and research that goes into my work. The hours spent walking and exploring, quite often with no expectations of finding anything worthwhile. But it is all part of the process, and enjoyment.

And then there are the repeated visits to a location in the hope of particular conditions to allow me to capture the photograph that I have in my head.

But there are is the opposite scenario when I am traveling with work or on holiday. Locations I am visiting which I know from the work of fellow artists and photographers. Often hundreds of miles away, no control over the weather or tide, and probably just one chance to create a photograph.

The photograph below is one example. A location in Maldon I have seen photographed many times (and far better!) but I had the opportunity to visit during a trip. Of the shots I took, this is the most pleasing. Sure, I would have liked to chop the fourth hut off with the solar panel but that would mean losing the third set of steps which I wanted to retain.

One opportunity to get the camera out at high tide. The middle of a sunny summer afternoon, shooting into a bright sun, little white fluffy clouds… not my preferred conditions but there was little choice.

I took the opportunity.

Photography is my passion. I love being outside, camera set up, waiting on the first light of the day.
